Houma’s Cajun Rollergirls are hosting a rookie day Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., for anyone interested in joining the league. It will be held at Aggie’s Skate Connection, at 10592 E. Main St. (near the Presque Isle Bridge) in Houma.

Swerve, the team’s coach, and the rest of the players will teach the rules and skills of roller derby.

Membership is open to females age 18 or older. Males are welcome to skate during practices or join the league as referees.

There are no clothing requirements on rookie day; however, participants should consider wearing a helmet, mouth guard, knee and elbow pads as well as wrist guards. Skates are also needed.

The Cajun Rollergirls will have gear on loan for the day.

The entry fee is $6. Skate rental is $2.

Also, the team is hosting a Halloween fundraiser Oct. 16 at the Piazza Bar in Houma.

The zombie-themed event kicks off at 8 p.m. In addition to games, prizes and a raffle, the event includes music by Waylon Thibodeaux and DJ TJ.

Admission is $7 at the door for “humans” and $5 at the door for “zombies,” who show up in costume. No one under 21 will be admitted.

The league, which was formed in April 2008, is presently pursuing membership in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA – www.wftda.org) and is on the verge of hosting its first game Nov. 7 at the Warren Harang Municipal Auditorium in Thibodaux.

The Cajun Rollergirls are also slated to appear at the release of “Whip It,” a major motion picture about roller derby, on Oct. 2 at the Palace Theater in Houma.
