For any success that E.D. White may have had in its pre-district schedule, coach Lance Ford stressed to his team prior to its district opener against West St. Mary that these are the games that count.

The Cardinals answered their coach’s call, pounding out 12 hits and beating West St. Mary 11-1.

The game was called after the fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.

“That’s exactly what we told the guys in the beginning,” said Ford of stressing the importance of the team’s district opener. “It’s your first district game, and it doesn’t matter who you’re playing—all the district games count.”

E.D. White (11-3 overall, 1-0 District 7-3A) did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard, scoring four runs off four hits in the bottom of the first inning.

After Ryan Jennings led off with a double to deep leftfield, Scott Rodrigue drove him home for a 1-0 lead. Rodrigue reached second base on a throwing error from the shortstop.

Rodrigue later scored on a single by Max Ledet, making it 2-0.

Later in the inning, Justin Ledet and Brady Boudreaux drove home runs to make it 4-0.

Cardinals’ pitcher Drey Trosclair sat down West St. Mary (8-7 overall, 0-1 District 7-3A) in order, and E.D. White continued its offensive barrage in the second inning, scoring six runs, for a 10-0 lead.

Max Ledet keyed the six-run second inning by hammering a three-run homerun over the centerfield wall, to make it 8-0.

Later in the inning, Justin Ledet and Boudreaux supplied two more runs, to make it 10-0.

West St. Mary answered with a run in the top of the third inning, but that was all the Wolfpack could muster on the day.

The Cardinals clinched the game on a Max Ledet single to left field, which scored Jennings for the 11-1 win.

Ford said the key to the game was hit team’s focus. “You’ve just got to come out focused for every ballgame,” he said. “That’s what we did. We put the ball in play. We hit the ball, and made them have to make some plays. We got runners on base, and when you jump out early, that adds just a little confidence going into the rest of the game.”

Max Ledet led the Cardinals, going 2-for-2 with four RBI’s and a homerun.

Trosclair earned the complete game win for E.D. White, allowing just two hits and striking out five batters.

Matt Gaudet took the loss for West St. Mary, allowing 10 hits in two innings of action.

Ford said it was important to not focus on the opponent, but rather on playing efficient. “We did that,” he said. “Not worrying about who we were playing, just coming out and knowing it is a district game and you’ve got to play hard every time out. I think that’s what we did today.”
