The Lady Terriers have won 11 straight after sweeping a home doubleheader from the Kaplan Lady Pirates in non-district action Saturday.

Game two’s 4-3 extra inning victory produced more drama than game one’s 8-0 beatdown.

In game two, Vandebilt (26-4-1) scored in the second inning. With runners on first and third, Mindy Robichaux was caught trying to steal second. Meanwhile, Saadie LeMaire sprinted from third, reaching home safely and giving Vandebilt a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Terriers scored again in the fifth when Lauren Crane (2-for-4, RBI) knocked a double that brought home starting pitcher Lauren Martinez for a 2-0 lead.

Martinez controlled the Lady Pirates through four innings but was pulled for LeMaire.

“Lauren’s riseball was really working today,” said Vandebilt head coach Margaret Johnson. “We had a lot of confidence in Saadie.”

Kaplan rallied in the sixth off LeMaire. In the first four batters she faced, LeMaire gave up three singles, threw two wild pitches and walked one, allowing two runs to score and tied the game 2-2.

The game stayed tied until the eighth. Kaplan first baseman Amanda Sistrund laid down a bunt that managed to get through the infield scoring Danielle Greene from second, and gave the Lady Pirates a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom half, Robichaux hit a single, bringing home Maddie Constant from third and tying the game 3-3.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Martinez (4-for-5), who returned to the mound after LeMaire was hooked in the sixth, hit the game-winning RBI single.

“That inning showed a lot of the character of our girls,” said Johnson. “I believe it showed a lot of grit for us to come back and win in our last at-bat.”

Martinez got the win allowing six hits and striking out five in seven innings. Kaplan pitcher Lana Hollier took the loss allowing 12 hits, had three strikeouts and three walks.

In game one, Lauren Crane (21-3-1) dominated in a complete game win, allowing four and striking out five. Heather Bergeron had one hit and three RBIs, and Kelsey Coombs had two hits and two RBIs for Vandebilt.
