It took three extra innings, but Vandebilt finally pushed the sole run across the plate for 1-0 Class 4A state championship victory over Live Oak Saturday night in Sulphur.

It is the Lady Terriers’ 13th state crown since 1980 – its first since 2006.

Senior Lauren Crane, who allowed zero runs in five postseason games, hit the game-winning RBI double in the top of the tenth to score Chelsea Allen from second.

Crane was just as fearless on the mound as she allowed five hits, struck out five batters and walked two.

It was the second extra-inning game Vandebilt (31-5-2) won on Saturday.

In the semifinals, the Lady Terriers needed eight innings to defeat Belle Chasse 1-0.

Live Oak (31-4-1) lost in the Class 4A title game for the second year in a row. Lady Eagles’ pitcher Brittany Gonzales endured the loss allowing one run, seven hits, five strikeouts and one walk.

Vandebilt’s Crane and Allen had two hits each.

Houma Christian loses in semifinals

The Houma Christian Lady Warriors’ dream of a Class B title fell in the semifinals 4-0 to Grand Lake Saturday afternoon.

Grand Lake (17-10-2) scored three runs in the third inning and one in the fifth for the win.

Houma Christian (26-6) stranded six runners on base and committed three costly errors in the game.

Grand Lake’s Lakeyn Duhon earned the win allowing just five hits, striking out 11 batters and walking three.

Sophomore Lauren Crowdus, the lone Lady Warrior with multiple hits, took the complete game loss. She allowed three hits, two walks and struck out two.

The season was still historic for Houma Christian, which won its first-ever district title, playoff game and made its first appearance in the state tournament.
