From NSU Sports Information

The Louisiana Sports Writers Association released their All-Louisiana squads on Saturday afternoon, and they selected senior guard/forward Stefan Blaszczynski to the first team.

“This is just a great honor for Stefan, and a great honor for his teammates,” said head coach J.P. Piper. “He was a pioneer for Nicholls State, and we are going to miss him next season.”

Blaszczynski becomes the first person since Arthur Haralson in 2001 to be selected to the first team, and the ninth to receive the award in school history. Blaszczynski led the Southland in scoring this season with a 19.7 average, and was named to the All-SLC First Team for his accomplishments.

He finished his career with 1,373 points and 518 rebounds to place him ninth of the all-time scoring list and 13th on the career rebounding list at Nicholls.†Blaszczynski scored a career best 33 points in his last game as a Colonel against McNeese State in the last contest of the season.† 26 of those points came in the second half as he tried to lift the Colonels to their first post-season birth in eight seasons, but his efforts fell short as the Colonels fell 77-76.

Nicholls senior guard Jamie Octave was named Third-Team All-Louisiana, announced the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, Friday evening.

Octave wrapped up her senior season averaging a team-high 16.8 points per game, while also recording a team-best 14 blocks. Her scoring average ranks her tied for second in the Southland Conference for the season. In addition, Octave finished second on the team in rebounds (5.0 rpg), assists (1.7 apg) and steals (1.7 spg). In terms of the Southland Conference, she finished in the top 15 in six different SLC statistical categories and in the top 25 in 10 categories.

Octave is definitely leaving her mark in the Nicholls record books, as she is closing out her career being listed in the top 15 in five different categories. A three-year starter for Nicholls, the Donaldsonville, La.-native became just the eighth player in Lady Colonel basketball history to break the 1,000-point mark for her career, and leaves as the fifth all-time leading scorer with 1,164 points.

Lady Colonels rebound, heat up bats, in snowy weather

The Colonels bounced back from two extra inning losses on Friday to defeat the Ladyjacks 4-1 in the snow on Saturday.

“We fought through the elements and just played very sound and very relaxed,” said head coach Jenny Parsons. “I am proud of my team for stepping up and playing like they did.† It was not easy playing in the snow.”

The Colonels (19-16, 10-7) put two runs on the scoreboard in the first inning when junior Amy Thibodeaux hit a two RBI double down the right field line that scored sophomore Kodi Butler and freshman Leah Bland.†The Ladyjacks (16-23, 9-6) countered in the bottom of the first with a run of their own to make the score 2-1 after one complete.

Nicholls tacked on one more in the top of the second when sophomore Danielle Clayton crossed the plate on a past ball.†It was the only run that the Colonels scored in the inning to make the score 3-1.†Senior Jacqueline Pacheco hit a solo-homerun in the top of the fifth to increase the Colonels’ lead to three.†

The Ladyjacks failed to score after the first inning as they left 10 runners on base in their loss to the Colonels on Saturday.†Nicholls left 11 runners on base in the contest.

Butler picked up the win for the Colonels to improve to 5-1 on the season.†Butler went the distance allowing eight hits, one unearned run, and struck out three in the process.† She also finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored to help her cause.

The prior day, the Colonels struggled, dropping both doubleheader games in extra innings. Nicholls lost the first game 6-5, in eight innings. The second went nine innings, and Nicholls lost 2-1.

The Colonels will be back in action on Tuesday April 10 when the travel to Jacksonville State for the midweek doubleheader.†The first game is slated to start at 4 p.m. with the second game to begin at 6 p.m.

Bourgeois continues Regional qualifying marks

Sophomore javelin thrower Leslie Bourgeois did not let the snow get in her way, as the Junior All-American tossed yet another regional qualifying mark at the Texas Relays on Saturday morning.

Even though five competitors dropped out of the competition due to the cold and snowy weather, Bourgeois remained in the event, and threw for 144-04 to finish in seventh place overall.

Bourgeois and the rest of the Colonels will return to action on Saturday, when they participate in the Florida State Seminole Twilight in Tallahassee, Fla.
