Nicholls State baseball coach Seth Thibodeaux puffed up like a proud papa in early June when asked about his players playing summer baseball.

“For the first time in this program that I can remember, we’ll have pretty much all of our players out there playing baseball this summer,” Thibodeaux said in an interview. “That’s a really big step for this program.”

Now scattered across the country, his guys are giving him a reason to feel even prouder.

Junior outfielder Mike Barba and senior pitchers Mike Wisecarver and Brad Delatte were named summer league all-stars this week for their solid play in their respective leagues.

Barba earned his spot as an all-star after hitting .275 with 14 stolen bases and 16 runs scored for the Acadiana Cane Cutters, of Youngsville, La., which play in the Texas Collegiate League.

He took the field in the TCL Cricket Wireless All-Star game Saturday in Bryan, Texas.

While Barba is making the most of his stay in Louisiana, Wisecarver and Delatte are packing Louisiana heat more than 1,000 miles away in the Northwoods League.

Pitching for Iowa’s Waterloo Bucks, Wisecarver has posted a 3-0 record with a 2.33 ERA in 43 innings this summer. The Colonels’ pitcher has struck out 36 batters with just 15 walks in his summer stint and was a member of the NWL’s South Division Team in Saturday’s NWL All-Star Game.

In the opposing dugout was Delatte, who represented the North Division Team after fielding a 1-0 record with a 2.28 ERA and three saves in 14 appearances so far with the Thunder Bay Border Cats, who play in Canada.

Pitching for the Border Cats for a second-straight season, Delatte has also racked up 21 strikeouts in 23 innings to help earn his spot on the All-Star roster.
