The Nicholls State football team took time out of their recruiting schedules to go visit one of their own.

Senior defensive back Jamal Simmons is at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center with injuries he suffered in a car accident. Simmons has been hospitalized since the accident on Dec. 27.

Simmons was involved in a head-on collision while driving on Louisiana Highway 308 two days after Christmas. His girlfriend and daughter sustained minor injuries from the crash.

The New Orleans native was relocated to Thibodaux Regional recently, giving his teammates the opportunity to visit him. The team showed up in their game-day jerseys and presented Simmons with his number 18.

“You could see how happy Jamal was when the team walked in,” said head coach Jay Thomas.

“It is good to see the team support him as he recovers. We are thankful that he is recovering quickly, and we will be there for him every step of the way,” the coach added.

Simmons played in the Colonels’ nine games this season, making eight starts at defensive back. He had 27 tackles, four pass breakups and one interception.

The biology major saw action in 10 games as a sophomore, making 11 tackles – eight of which were solo.

Simmons prepped at Karr High School where he earned first team All-District, All-Metro and All-Westbank honors as a senior before signing with the Colonels.

Thomas said Simmons is recovering well and should be healed by the start of next season.
