SN: How long have you been playing basketball, and what got you interested in the sport?

AW: I’ve been playing basketball since I was six. My dad played basketball in high school, and my family is just a big sport’s family, so I had to get involved in something. Being that I was the tallest 6-year-old you’ve ever seen, I started playing basketball.

SN: What’s your favorite thing about playing here at Ellender, considering the tradition here?

AW: That’s the best part. Trying to keep up that reputation, and trying to live up to the standards that DeAndra and Allison and the rest of the girls left behind.

SN: Can you talk about what it’s like playing here at Ellender, with that tradition?

AW: It’s good. The school expects a lot out of the team. People in Houma, like family, expect a lot out of the team. So it’s like another thing that drives the team, that keeps us going and together.

SN: So far, what’s been your favorite memory of playing here at Ellender?

AW: My favorite memory was my freshman year. That was like the breakout season for everything. I made First-Team All District, and I was the first freshman at Ellender to make the First-Team All District. So that was something that keeps me going.

SN: Who’s your favorite opponent to play, and why?

AW: That’s hard. It depends what year it is, because the teams change. My freshman year I’d have to say H.L. Bourgeois, because that’s when they were stacked. Last year it had to be Vandebilt. This year, I’d say our toughest matchup was McDonough 35, out of New Orleans. We had to play them four times. We were the only people that beat them at first, and once we beat them there was a rumor that we crushed their spirits and they just started going down after that. That was our best games.

SN: Talk about Ellender’s “32 Minutes of Pain.”

AW: That’s just how it. When we’re playing, that’s more of what the opponents feel. Try to take no prisoners, and just go out there and play and do the best we can.

SN: Talk about being a part of this team, with your teammates.

AW: We’re a little family. We have our little meetings, our little get togethers, where we all go out together. It’s Mardi Gras time, so I’m pretty sure we’ll catch a parade as a team. We’re a little close-knit family. We have our little ups and downs, but all in the end, we all stick together.

SN: What’s something about coach Kenneth Dixon that maybe only the team knows about?

AW: Coach Dixon, he’s a trip. He’s the funniest man. He can tell you the biggest joke and have the whole gym laughing, but then you’ll have to think about it because he’ll have a message behind it. He’s the best teacher I’ve ever had. He’s a great person.
