Saints hire Fred McAfee to help players with off-the-field needs

The New Orleans Saints on Friday hired Fred McAfee, a longtime member of the Saints’ special teams who retired last season, as the team’s director of player programs.

McAfee will provide information and aid for players off the field, such as training seminars, family assistance, internships, academic pursuits and financial advice.

“I saw a lot during my time in the league, I learned a lot and can bring a new perspective to this position,” McAfee said.

He is also expected to help rookies and retired players adapt to their new circumstances, the team said.

McAfee, who was known as “Fast Freddy” because of his speed, retired at the end of last season after the Saints lost the NFC championship game and then made him a free agent.

He played in the National Football League for 16 seasons and 194 games, including 122 with the Saints from 1991-93 and 2000-06. The Saints drafted him in the sixth round in 1991.

He was a Saints team favorite for his good nature and work ethic.

“His years in the game and the respect that our players have for him because of his accomplishments, we expect he will be a positive influence on our team,” said general manager Mickey Loomis.

McAfee is a native of Philadelphia, Miss., and graduated from Mississippi College.
