South Lafourches’s search for a new football coach is finally over.

And the find came from its own backyard.

Tarpons athletic director Brian Callais announced last week that assistant football coach Blyght Wunstell will take over the reins of the team.

Wunstell beat out nine other candidates to become the sixth head coach in school history.

&#8220We were impressed with Blyght,” Callais said. &#8220He’s energetic and brings a lot of fire to our program. He’s a hard worker who will give us the spark we need.”

Wunstell inherits a squad that posted a 9-20 record during three seasons under former coach Tommy Gisclair.

Callais thinks Wunstell’s experience will be a big asset.

&#8220He has been at different programs around the state and has gained a little from each team to form his own philosophy,” Callais said.

Wunstell helped South Lafourche win two District 8-4A titles as a quarterback from 1986 to 1988.
