Three Tri-parish teams fall short in 5A playoffs

Three District 8-5A teams made this year’s LHSAA baseball playoffs. All went on the road and were eliminated on day one of competition last Thursday.


District champions, South Terrebonne, seeded 17th, gave up back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to lose to 16th seeded Mandeville 3-2 in the Class 5A bi-district game.

Gators starter Kurt Charpentier (7-2) was throwing a one-hitter before the homers and took the loss.


Skippers starter Garrett Cannizaro (6-0) earned the complete game win with seven strikeouts and two walks.


South Terrebonne (23-5) took the lead in the top of the first inning when Alex Prestenbach delivered a two-out double, scoring Brock Hebert.

Mandeville (18-11) evened the score in the bottom of the first when Hardy hit an double, scoring a runner.


In the top of the second, Hebert singled to score Josh Neil and give the Gators a 2-1 lead.


Jamie Bruno and Ross Hardy led off the bottom the sixth with their homeruns for the victory.

Hebert led the Gators with two hits, and an RBI. Alex Prestenbach (double, RBI) and Neil (run) had one hit each.


In Lafayette, 31st seeded H.L. Bourgeois managed only two hits and made five errors for eight unearned runs in its 8-1 loss to second seeded Acadiana (29-6-1).

The Braves (15-17) scored in the top of the seventh inning to avoid a shutout.

Braves starter Jake Fabre, a Delgado signee, threw four innings and struck out two in the defeat.

Rams’ starter Daniel Cloteaux allowed only one hit with eight strikeouts over five innings with fastballs and cutters for the win.

The Braves committed three errors in the third inning permitting four runs and two errors in the fourth also permitting four runs.

At Maestri Field in New Orleans, all the runs were produced in the first inning as 27th seeded Thibodaux loss 7-1 to sixth seeded Brother Martin.

Tigers’ leadoff batter, center fielder Brandon Talbot, hit a home run on the game’s second pitch. Then Crusaders starter Reece Rodrigue retired 10 straight batters as he pitched a six-inning one-hitter with nine strikeouts.

The Crusaders (25-9) sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Tigers (17-14) got only one other runner on base the rest of the game.
