It did not take long for the Vandebilt Lady Terriers to set the tone for a possible return to the state championship match in their playoff opener, last Thursday at Buddy Marcello Stadium in Houma.

Just 27 seconds into the Lady Terriers match against McKinley, Cayla Chatman scored her first of three goals on the night in Vandebilt’s 9-0 win over the Lady Panthers. “That’s what we need,” said Vandebilt head coach Phil Amedee. “We scored our first goal 27 seconds into the game, and everybody kind of relaxed after that and played well.”

Despite being down several players due to the illness and injuries, Vandebilt had no problem eliminating the Lady Panthers from the playoffs. Just two minutes after her first goal, Chatman scored again to put Vandebilt ahead 2-0.

Four minutes later, Kandace Alexander extended the lead to 3-0 on a shot to the near post.

The Lady Terriers made it 4-0 in the 10th minute, on a rebounded shot by Kacey Amedee.

“The girl’s played well,” said coach Amedee. “We’re fortunate to have some depth with our team, and the girls stepped up and played well.”

And they did not slow down after the ten-minute, four-goal flurry. Megan Authement made it 5-0 in the 15th minute on a shot to the upper corner of the goal.

Andrea Vice and Lindsey Warren rounded out the first-half scoring with goals in the 27th and 31st minutes, giving Vandebilt a 7-0 halftime lead.

Amedee said he is excited about the way his team is playing right now. “We’ve been having some good practices,” he said, “and I think that’s made quite the difference, here. They’re playing well. We’re hitting our peak at the right time.”

The Lady Terriers rounded out the scoring with goals from Chatman (47th minute) and Amedee (54th minute).

With the win, the Lady Terriers will host Ursuline in the Regional round of the playoffs. Ursuline received a bye in the Bi-District round.

“Hopefully in a few weeks, we’ll be playing in the state championship again,” said Amedee. “We’ve got tough competition coming up, so we can’t overlook anybody. Ursuline’s got a quality team, so we have our work cut out for us.”
