Week 3 news and notes in the Tri-parishes:

62: The total yards Patterson’s suffocating defense limited St. James to this weekend. The Lumberjacks are now 2-0 with consecutive shutouts to begin the year.

124: The number of points South Terrebonne’s high-powered offense has accumulated in the first three games of the season. The Gators rolled to a 3-0 start Friday with an easy win over previously unbeaten H.L. Bourgeois.

241: The total all-purpose yards Thibodaux quarterback Aaron Thomas racked up in Friday’s game against Assumption. Thomas’ efforts fell short as the Tigers dropped to 0-3 on the season after another hard-fought loss.

SportsNet Week 3 Players of the Week:

Bronze: South Lafourche quarterback Seth Griffin, What do you know? Griffin’s again on the list. The Tarpons’ dual-threat signal caller completed 10-of-20 passes for 214 yards with three touchdowns, while also running for about 50 more yards. Griffin’s labors paid off as the Tarpons upset John Ehret for their first win of the season.

Silver: Thibodaux quarterback Aaron Thomas, The Tigers just can’t buy a win, thanks in part to a brutal non-district schedule. But that’s not because of Thomas, who rushed for 108 yards and passed for 136 more with a pair of touchdowns. If those numbers hold up, look out for the Tigers with district play looming.

Gold: Patterson High School’s defense, It’s hard to lose if you don’t allow points. Through two games, Patterson’s defense has proven just that. The Lumberjacks have shutout consecutive opponents to start the year, completely dominating St. James in their most recent effort. If this keeps up, there’s no telling just how far the Jacks may go this season.

The Super 6 power rankings (ranking Casey Gisclair’s six best Tri-parish teams):

1. Patterson. Sure, Central Lafourche and St. James are a little bit down this season, but anytime you’ve outscored your opponents 83-0 to start the season, you’re doing something right. If you’re in or around St. Mary Parish, do yourself a favor and catch the Jacks in action sometime this season.

2. Central Catholic. I really want to move South Terrebonne to this spot, but it’s awfully hard to bump down a Class 1A team that just got done dusting off a Class 3A school by 47 points. Central Catholic surely knows how to play some football.

3. South Terrebonne. It was a battle of the unbeaten Friday at South Terrebonne. When the dust settled, only one team showed they truly belonged among the ranks of the elite, the Gators. South Terrebonne’s offense wowed H.L. Bourgeois who just showed they aren’t yet ready to compete with the best, despite making great strides in just a few weeks under new coach Ben Powell.

4. E.D. White. E.D. White doesn’t do anything amazingly well, but they just are very good at everything. That equates to a very sound football team, one that showed a lot of poise Friday when they dusted off Terrebonne.

5. South Lafourche. John Ehret’s a very good football team. Don’t tell that to the Tarpons, who took out their frustrations after an 0-2 started on the Patriots, pounding them into the ground in a 40-14 drubbing.

6. Vandebilt. With star quarterback Elijah McGuire out with a litany of injuries, the Terriers rallied together and scored their first win, beating a solid Plaquemine team on the road. When McGuire gets back, look out.

South Lafourche quarterback Seth Griffin makes an option pitch during a game this season. A regular on the weekly list of medalists, Griffin threw for more than 200 yards in the Tarpons’ blowout win over John Ehret. CASEY GISCLAIR
