With their postseason hopes on the line, the Colonels pulled off a weekend series sweep with a 2-0 victory Sunday over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Nicholls (28-27, 15-14) will enter the SLC Tournament as the No. 6 seed following a loss Sunday by Sam Houston State (30-30, 15-15), and two losses Saturday by Southeastern La. (27-24, 14-15). The Islanders (21-32, 11-19) was eliminated from postseason contention with their opening series loss to Nicholls on Saturday.

Nicholls got the scoring started in the top of the second with a RBI single by senior Amy Thibodeaux that plated sophomore Audrey Wood for the Colonels to go up 1-0.

Nicholls added one more in the top of the third when junior Danielle Clayton knocked a RBI single that scored senior Kat Harrell from second base to give the Colonels the 2-0 lead.

Krystalin Ensminger kept the Islanders off balance as she threw all seven innings only allowing four hits for the shutout victory.

Leading the Colonels at the plate were Harrell and sophomore Nicole Smith with two hits each. Putting together 1-for-3 performances were Clayton, Thibodeaux and Wood. Also, Clayton and Thibodeaux each had an RBI as Wood had a run scored.

NSU baseball team nets come-from-behind win

Nicholls used a five-run seventh inning for a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Texas-Arlington on Sunday.

With the victory, the Colonels improve to 9-39 (4-20 SLC) and give Nicholls its first two-game winning streak of the season.

Nicholls got a solo homerun from Kevin Persick in the fifth before its offensive explosion.

Nicholls found itself down early, giving up two runs in the first on four-straight singles to the first four UTA batters of the game. The Mavericks added a run in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings to make it a 5-1 ballgame.

Shane Barksdale led off the seventh inning with a single and advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches. Anthony Wray walked and, with runners at the corners, Persick drove in his second RBI of the day with a single, scoring Barksdale.

Another wild pitch advanced Wray and Persick to third and second, respectively, before T.J. Menerey drove a single to center that scored both runners. Menerey was sacrificed to second and scored on consecutive wild pitches from the Mavericks hurler Andy Sauter. With two out, Brett Cook singled to right, scoring Walter Jones, who had reached base on a single in the previous at bat.

Persick led the Colonels, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Jones, Barksdale and Jordy Toups all had two hits on the day.

Menerey drove in two runs and scored one run in the game.

Justin Breaux (2-5) picked up the win for Nicholls after throwing 2.1 innings of one-hit, one-run relief. Lance Guidroz earned his first save of the season, giving up just two hits in three innings.

The Colonels will take to the road this weekend, traveling to San Antonio for a three-game set with the Roadrunners. These are the last road games of the season for Nicholls. Friday night’s first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
