Houma native Elijah McGuire has decided that he will finish out his college eligibility at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Ragin’ Cajun school officials announced on Monday morning that McGuire had informed them that he will return to the school for his senior season – a decision that he was pondering for the past several weeks.

The Vandebilt graduate had sent his information to the NFL Draft Advisory Board – an obvious sign that he was pondering a move to the NFL.

But reports said that McGuire opted to return to school after seeing his grade in hopes of being selected higher next year.

McGuire’s college career has been special.

As a freshman, the Houma native took the Sun Belt Conference by storm, making a late-season surge and winning the Conference’s Freshman of the Year honors – all while helping lead the Ragin’ Cajuns to the New Orleans Bowl.

As a sophomore, McGuire was even better, winning the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, after rushing for 1,264 yards and scoring 14 touchdowns and again pushing UL-Lafayette to the New Orleans Bowl title.

In 2015, McGuire still had a solid season, but his production dropped.

McGuire rushed for 1,058 yards and 13 touchdowns, but his yards per carry dropped from 7.6 in 2014 to just 5.0 in 2015.

That was because teams were more able to key in on the local star with some of the team’s other standouts gone to graduation. •
