Nicholls State University sophomore Chelsea Cain scored a career-high 26 points in the women’s basketball team’s  67-61 loss to Alabama A&M Wednesday afternoon.

The Colonels trailed 22-11 in the first quarter but were able to cut their deficit to 35-30 with two minutes until halftime. However, the Bulldogs went in another run to widen their lead by 10 points by the half.

Nicholls outscored Alabama A&M by four in the second half — with Cain contributing 16 points — but ultimately it wasn’t enough to secure the win.

Cain finished 10 of 18 from the field and added 11 rebounds for her second career double-double.

The Colonels will begin conference play on Saturday, Jan. 2 by hosting Sam Houston State.

Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN+.
