Lafourche surpasses 80,000 tests; state adds over 5,000 new cases since Thursday

The Nicholls State University women’s basketball team won its Southland Conference opener, defeating Sam Houston State 89-82 on Saturday. 

Sam Houston, who trailed for most of the game, was able to tie it at 80 with two minutes left, but Nicholls held on with a late three-pointer and free throws. 

The win ended a five-game losing streak for the Colonels (2-6, 1-0 SLC) and improved their home record to 2-1.


The Colonels’ scoring leader was sophomore forward Chelsea Cain who scored 29 points, a career-best. She also had 13 rebounds, giving her her second straight double-double. Junior guard Anna McKendree added 17 points and five assists. 

Next, Nicholls will play an away game against Lamar University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
