Prep football Week 1 By the Numbers

8: The number of games canceled by Hurricane Isaac across the area. Covenant Christian, South Lafourche, Central Lafourche, Thibodaux, South Terrebonne, Houma Christian, Morgan City and Berwick all were unable to play their season openers due to the storm.

1,417: The number of days that had passed between victories for Ellender. The Patriots got in the win column to start the season with a 26-7 rout of Terrebonne.

42: With big plays on their mind, E.D. White averaged more than 42 yards per completion in its victory against Vandebilt.

Week 1 players of the week:

Bronze: E.D. White receiver Colby Masse – Masse only caught three passes in Saturday’s win against rival Vandebilt. But they were all for huge gains. The Cardinals’ flanker hauled in a whopping 186 yards on his three grabs to get E.D. White off to a 1-0 start.

Silver: Hurricane Isaac – No single entity had a larger impact on our area’s week than Isaac. The storm canceled eight total games and postponed every game played this week. It also halted practice schedules for every team in the area, which could have been a factor in some of the upsets that played out this week.

Gold: The Ellender football team – I thought with 100 percent certainty that Isaac would take the gold in Week 1 after reeking havoc on the local schedule. But Ellender changed everyone’s plans on Sunday afternoon. These guys have had a rough few years. The 30-plus straight losses are one thing. But the Patriots had to deal with constant ridicule from opponents and others around the community. But after a 26-7 win over Terrebonne, Ellender is riding high. They will shoot for a 2-0 start in a winnable game against H.L. Bourgeois. Kudos to the Patriots who deserved more than anyone to get off to a strong start in 2012.

The Power 6 (Ranking the top six teams in the area, according to Sports Editor Casey Gisclair)

1. South Lafourche – The Tarpons didn’t play their season-opening tilt with Destrehan because of Isaac. But their 50-plus point win in their jamboree holds enough weight to earn the team the top spot in the opening week of power rankings.

2. E.D. White – The Cardinals said in the preseason they wanted to win the close ones in 2012. They are one-for-one so far. With a 20-15 lead late in Saturday’s game with Vandebilt, E.D. White put their rivals away with a late touchdown drive.

3. Central Catholic – The Eagles have too many returnees to completely fall off the map. Their season-opening loss is a setback. But I suspect they’ll turn things around quickly and get on a winning streak.

4. South Terrebonne – The Gators are always one of the best-coached football teams in the area. If their staff can quickly mesh their young, but talented players into accelerated maturity, expect South Terrebonne to win again.

5. Patterson – The Lumberjacks’ powerful offense scored a ton. It was the defense that failed Patterson in Week 1’s loss to Crowley. With a softer schedule coming, I expect the Jacks to bounce back and find their groove.

6. Ellender – The Patriots have never made my power rankings during my three years back in the area. But after a sound 26-7 win over Terrebonne, Ellender has the attention of the entire Tri-parish area.
