Week 3: Highlights, scores and stats of Tri-parish prep games
September 18, 2012

These past few weeks have been hectic for your neighborhood sports guy.

Not that I’m complaining – I love what I do.

But things just have been brutally busy around here.

First there was our prep football preview guide and all of its 16-page glory.

I love all of our area’s 15 high schools, but that joker was and is a lot of work!

It required 15 afternoon trips to 15 schools.

Phew, that’s a lot of miles and a lot of hours spent in the sun.

I don’t know if any of you all realize this, but it gets pretty hot around these parts at 2:30 p.m.

Then there was Hurricane Isaac.

He literally arrived as we were polishing up the high school football tab.

I won’t be as nice about that guy. Isaac was a jerk of epic proportions.

If I ever see that guy again, I have a good mind to give him five knuckles across his face.

This Isaac guy had the nerve to take my family from Cut Off to Houston and upon return left me as an evacuee at an Ole Miss fan’s apartment here in Houma.

Yes, you heard me right – an Ole Miss fan.

Yuck.

Hurricanes make us do crazy things sometimes. This particular storm made me share a roof with a Rebels’ alum.

It is what it is.

Jokes about my SEC rival aside, the Tri-Parish Times immediately moved from our hurricane coverage (which we handled admirably) to our Inside College Football issue, which again is a lot of labor for ‘ol Case.

Long story made short, I’m tired.

Those black things under my eyes are actual bags, not eye black.

But when I’m tired, I look for ways to have some fun.

So here goes.

It’s time for the annual 12-word salute to NFL teams.

Some of the words written are serious – others are more sarcastic.

Either way, it’s a challenge to sum up a team’s fate in a dozen words.

Here’s what I got.

Anyone wishing to drop 12 words about the team of their choice can feel free to do so on our Facebook page.

AFC East:

Buffalo Bills – They let Mark Sanchez rip them up. Still no defense for Buffalo.

Miami Dolphins – Hard Knocks’ darling will have a long season with Tannehill at quarterback.

New York Jets – Sanchez and Tebow are playing nice. But how long will that last?

New England Patriots – Better defense spells bad news for the rest of the AFC East.

AFC North:

Baltimore Ravens – If Flacco breaks out, this is the best team in the AFC.

Cincinnati Bengals – Look for the sophomore slump to plague Dalton and Green this year.

Cleveland Browns – When your rookie quarterback is older than Aaron Rodgers, you have problems.

Pittsburgh Steelers – Always a contender, but older defense showing signs of wear and tear.

AFC South:

Houston Texans – Would have won the Super Bowl last year if Schaub didn’t fall.

Indianapolis Colts – Luck will be great. But talent around him is not very good.

Jacksonville Jaguars – I don’t blame MJD. Wouldn’t you want to avoid the Jags, too?

Tennessee Titans – Chris Johnson had four yards in the season opener. Bad news, Titans.

AFC West:

Denver Broncos – Peyton Manning is old, but dang that geezer can sling a pigskin.

Kansas City Chiefs – Talented, yes. But not quite on par with the other division foes.

Oakland Raiders – Carson Palmer helps Oakland, but not enough to challenge Denver for division.

San Diego Chargers – Simply put: If they don’t make postseason, Norv Turner will get canned.

NFC East:

Dallas Cowboys – New secondary gives hope to loyal fan base tired of Terrence Newman.

New York Giants – Who will show up longer? Playoff Giants or regular season stinker Giants?

Philadelphia Eagles – Mike Vick doesn’t seem right. If he’s not, Eagles will tank again.

Washington Redskins – RGIII is good. But he won’t always face the New Orleans’ secondary.

NFC North:

Detroit Lions – A sleeper pick to win the Super Bowl if offseason problems disappear.

Minnesota Vikings – What Adrian Peterson is doing is amazing. What a warrior Minnesota has.

Chicago Bears – Brandon Marshall gives Chicago the threat they haven’t had under Lovie Smith.

Green Bay Packers – Aaron Rodgers needs major help defensively if he wants another Super Bowl.

NFC South:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Vincent Jackson and Carl Nicks give the team hope after bad 2011.

Atlanta Falcons – Fast-paced offense will be a terror for opponents. A real NFC favorite.

New Orleans Saints – Worst secondary known to man could easily drown out dominant offensive unit.

Carolina Panthers – Cam Newton is great. But the Panthers’ defense still not elite level.

NFC West:

Arizona Cardinals – Will it be Kolb or Skelton? Does it matter? Neither can play.

San Francisco 49ers – Best defense in today’s offensive-minded game. They easily are my NFC favorites.

St. Louis Rams – Jeff Fisher will help. But big-time success is still pretty far away.

Seattle Seahawks – Matt Flynn will earn his money soon enough. Russell Wilson isn’t durable.

OK, so while we’re here, I know you all want Super Bowl picks, right?

I don’t know why anyone would rely on my opinion considering I picked San Diego to win it all last season.

But either way, give me the Patriots, Ravens, Texans and Broncos to reach the AFC Playoffs as division winners with Pittsburgh and San Diego as entering as Wild Cards.

From there, I like Dallas, Green Bay, Atlanta and San Francisco in the NFC with Chicago and Detroit as the two Wild Cards.

Out of that bunch, I see Baltimore winning it all over San Francisco in a close, defensive battle.

I know, I know, I know.

I left out the Saints in the list of playoff teams.

That’s not a type-o.

That defense can’t stop anybody.

This just in: the Redskins just scored again in the Dome.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith fires a pass during the team’s regular season opener against the Green Bay Packers. With consistent offense and dominant defense, the 49ers are a favorite of Sports Editor Casey Gisclair.
