Alleged beer thief found driving under suspension

Shelby Landry 39, of Thibodaux, was arrested Thursday afternoon, the aftermath of his crime evident on his breath.

Lafourche authorities fielded a beer theft complaint at a convenience store on La. Highway 20 in Thibodaux. A man driving a green pickup allegedly left without paying for the case of beer he was carrying.

Surveillance images helped police track the driver through a partial license plate.

Around 4:15 p.m. Thursday, deputies visited Landry’s Louis Lane home to follow-up on the case.

They saw him stop his truck, back up on the road and turn into the front yard of another residence. Landry failed a field sobriety test, refusing to continue. He also refused to submit to a breathalyzer test. A warrant was obtained to draw blood; the test results are pending from the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab in Baton Rouge.

Authorities said Landry is no newcomer to DWI – his second DWI conviction was in June 2014. He was ordered to have an ignition interlock device installed on his vehicle, which he failed to do. His license was also suspended.

He was booked for DWI (3rd offense), driving under suspension and failing to have a court-ordered ignition interlock device on his vehicle, as well as theft of goods. Judge Steven M. Miller set bond at $21,000.

Car thief to police: App made me commit crime

Lionel Adams Jr., 46, of 1617 Canal Blvd., Thibodaux, offered Thibodaux Police a unique explanation for driving off in someone else’s car: His phone app made him do it.

Police charged Adams with theft of a motor vehicle, DWI and entering or remaining after being forbidden.

The car’s owner told police he’d parked outside a business around 7:21 p.m. last Wednesday and went inside. When he returned a short time later, the vehicle was gone.

Adams and the car were found on Haulsey Street near Ledet Street shortly after receiving the stolen car call. Adams told police his phone app said the car was his. Upon further questioning, he admitted he knew it wasn’t his car. He also failed the standard field sobriety test.

Police also learned Adams had been banned for stealing from the store outside of which he stole the vehicle.

Convicted sex offender arrested for making contact with victim

James Brown, 21, of Raceland, is facing additional criminal charges after he contacted the minor he was convicted last month of having sex with.

The victim’s parents contacted Lafourche authorities in September after learning the teen allegedly had sexual relations with an older man. LPSO detectives learned Brown allegedly had consensual sex at least once with the victim in late September. A warrant was issued for his arrest for felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile. Brown also had two existing warrants for contempt of court.

Authorities found and arrested Brown Oct. 15, 2014. He was later convicted for the crime, registered as a Tier 1 sex offender and ordered not to contact the victim.

Early Jan. 4, the teen’s parents contacted the sheriff’s office after finding Brown in the victim’s bedroom.

Brown has been charged with unlawful presence or contact of a sex offender relative to a former victim and entering after being forbidden. Judge Steven M. Miller set his bond at $6,000. He is also being held for Louisiana Probation and Parole.

Man wanted for felony thefts at local retailers

Lafourche authorities are seeking help finding Tate Callais, 44, in connection with a series of thefts at local retailers.

Beginning in late October 2014, detectives began investigating a series of transactions at a Cut Off hardware store. Authorities said Tate allegedly purchased several items with checks that were later canceled by the issuing bank.

Detectives said Tate used his identity with some of the purchases and a false ID with others.

Tate reportedly purchased nearly $800 in merchandise from the store within a five-day period. Some of the items were returned, which netted him more than $500 in cash back.

On Christmas Eve, deputies were called to a Larose grocery store in reference to a theft.

Authorities said Tate reportedly entered the store claiming to represent a local company representing the oil and gas industry. He approached with cashier with more than $600 worth of merchandise and gift cards and attempted to complete the purchase with a purchase order number on the company’s behalf.

When the store manager contacted the company Callais claimed to represent and learned the purchase order did not exist.

Warrants for felony theft and contempt of court were issued. Bonds for the warrants totals $17,500.

Detectives believe Callais is residing in the Houma area. He is known to visit south Lafourche frequently.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call Crime Stoppers Bayou Region at 1-800-743-7433 or by testing “GIVEATIP” plus your message to 274637.
