1. GROW MUSCLE & SAVE TIME:

Keep your weight workouts under an hour. After 60 minutes, your body starts producing more of the stress hormone cortisol, which can have a testosterone-blocking, muscle-wasting effect.

2. SET & MEET GOALS:

Commit to achievable fitness goals. Write down short term goals, even if it is that you will make every training session that week. This helps keep you motivated and reminds you that this is something you care about when things get busy.

3. GET BY WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM YOUR FRIENDS:

Find good training partners that will hold you accountable and vice-a-versa. They will have rough days and it is your job to pull them through just as they will have to do the same for you. It is also much more fun to train with friends, increasing the likelihood that you will continue on your mission.

4. EXPECT TO HAVE BAD DAYS:

Bad days will come and may cause you to miss a session or fall off your diet. It is not the end of the world so don’t beat yourself up. As soon as possible, hop back on the horse and get after it. One or two days of unhealthy eating can easily be resolved, two months cannot.

5. EMBRACE SLEEP:

Sleep allows both your mind and muscles time to recover. Plus, studies have shown large increases in the chance of injury in those individuals who do not properly catch up on zzz’s during heavy training periods.

6. HAVE FUN!

Working out should be enjoyable. Keep your workouts fresh by incorporating new and fun exercises – take a class with a friend, connect with a personal trainer, plan a family competition at boot camp. Change the volume, intensity and design of your workouts so they don’t become stagnant. Finding exercises that you enjoy will make you more likely to continue training.
