Terrebonne Parish District 8 Councilman Dirk Guidry announced he is running for re-election.

Guidry will go against Peter “Pete” Rhodes in the race for District 8’s seat. The election is on Oct. 24.

Guidry has served one term as Councilman, starting his stint in 2011. He hopes to hold onto the seat for another four years and finish what he’s started.

“I’m excited to have another four years, see some projects I started all the way through. We need to keep moving forward,” he said.

Guidry is a lifelong resident of District 8, a U.S. Air Force veteran and a member of the American Legion. He owns a number of small businesses as well, such as Pizza Express in Houma and Chauvin and Gator Mini-Storage.

Guidry considers his biggest accomplishment in his first four years the acquisition of land along Bayouside Drive and Klondyke Road. The Parish acquired 52 acres of property with the intention of building a new recreation center and also a new library.

Guidry views the library as a conduit for education, which he thinks will reap public safety benefits.

“Education is the key to crime prevention,” he said.

Guidry says that the biggest challenge city council faces is improving drainage and flood protection in the area.

“If you can conquer drainage problems, you can move ahead,” Guidry said.

The councilman says people in the parish have been getting priced out of housing due to skyrocketing home insurance prices. He believes that improving flood protection will adjust the home insurance market and make living here more affordable.

Guidry has been married to Wendy Price Guidry for 30 years, and has two daughters and three granddaughters.
