So far, so good in the 2017 Hurricane Season.

At press-time on Monday afternoon, 12 days have passed in the hurricane season and there has still not yet been a named storm.

That’s not altogether uncommon, as the peak months of any season are in August and September when water temperatures rise and wind shear dies down, which makes for more easy cyclone development.

But meteorologists did express optimism this week at some things they’re seeing in current weather patterns, which may help us in the coming months.

David Bernard with Fox-8 weather said multiple times during broadcasts this week that Louisiana temperatures have been cooler than normal in recent weeks – often hovering in the low-to-mid 80s.

Bernard said we’ve only had one day with a high temperature over 90 degrees since May 1, making 2017 statistically one of the coolest late-springs that Louisiana has seen in quite some time.

Also good news is that satellite images also show a high level of shear over the Carribbean, which extends north into the Gulf of Mexico, as well.

This means that any storms that develop in the next four-tosix weeks likely will have too much atmospheric resistence to become major hurricanes.
