Lucy Gautreaux and Brooke Bordelon are friends now, but on April 30 they’ll be competing to see who can sell the most lemonade.

The two E.D. White Catholic High School students are participating in Lemonade Day, a statewide event geared toward teaching children about entrepreneurship. Lemonade Day sponsors expect more than 20,000 children to set up their stands across the state.

Gautreaux said she has looked toward a nearby company, and corporate sponsor of the event, for inspiration regarding her lemonade recipe.

“A lot of lemons and a lot of sugar. A lot of sugar, not too much sugar, like the Cane’s lemonade, that’s the best” she said.

Students interested in having their own stand are asked to register online, with one adult signing on as a mentor. They then pick up a backpack at any Raising Cane’s in the state or the Rouses locations in Houma and Thibodaux. The backpacks feature a workbook giving kids a guide to starting up their own business. Katie Portier, marketing associate for Synergy Bank, jokingly said she is not sure how large of a loan a child participating could take, but that the workbook details ways to find investors for small business.

Terrebonne Parish President Gordon Dove attended the Lemonade Day kick off event, and remembers his own lemonade stand on Levron Street. He said the stands help children learn the value of a dollar, and the parish will do its part to facilitate the young entrepreneurs’ work on April 30.

“We’re going to waive all permits and occupational licenses for this. No building permits either,” Dove said.

Jordan Piazza, Lemonade Day Louisiana executive director, speaks during the Lemonade Day kick-off event for the Houma-Thibodaux area on Friday. The day, set for April 30, gives children a chance to learn about running a small business.
