In recent years, local patrons have been going to Mi mi’s Creole Cafe and Oyster Bar for their home-style and delicious Cajun, creole and soul food dishes.

Now located at 210 Lafayette St.. Mimi’s offers an impressive range of entities that includes crab stew, southern fried chicken, ted beans, ribs, po’boys, pasta dishes and seafood platters-in addition to their daily lunch specials. They even do a Sunday brunch.

Having bands play on weekend nights, drink specials, chic decor and dim lighting gives the restaurant a true ‘nightlife’ setting.

Like many families in the area. mine had grown an appreciation for Mimi’s-even though the restaurant was just established a few years ago. My mom, sister and I visited the cafe last Friday night and, as always, enjoyed our time there.

After being seated in the booths near the windows, we started off with a dozen chargrilled oysters for the table. I ordered a cup of their chicken and sausage file gumbo, and my mom got a combination cup (it’s not listed on the menu, but just ask.) of the chicken and sausage and the seafood.

The oysters and gumbo were both prepared well enough to impress the most Cajun south Louisianian. The gumbo was savory and made with an exquisite, tasteful roux. The chargrilled oysters-topped with parmesan cheese, parsley and butter-were fresh, and not drenched in other add-on a. like many restaurants do, and allowed to let the true oyster flavor be dominant

For my entree. I ordered the Pasta on the Bayou. The dish consists of fresh gulf shrimp (your choice of fried or grilled). Mimi’s special sauce, penne pasta and slices of French bread. The entree doesn’t come with sides, but I chose to get a serving of the mustard greens and corn bread dressing.

The pasta dish and sides, like the previous food that arrived at our table, were hot and fresh from the kitchen.

The flavorful Mimi’s sauce on the Pasta on the Bayou was rich, creamy and thick-much like a traditional southern fettuccine. The shrimp were tinder and seasoned to perfection, and the sauteed crawfish were as well. The garlic, green onions, pasta and bread complemented the meat and sauce.

The sides were close behind the entree on the taste meter The mustard greens were mouth-watering and filled with scrumptious salt meat The corn bread dressing-containing ground meat-was surprisingly sweet (having a somewhat cinnamon taste) but exceptional.

I, along with my mom-who got the same dish but with fried shrimp-and my sister, who went with the filet offish, were left extremely satisfied with our meals.

Upset we finished eating before the band finished setting up. we still were able to enjoy listening to our waitress sing a beautiful solo rendition of “Happy Birthday” at a nearby table It was just another great total experience at one of our local favorites.
