I have a great relationship with the student-athletes in the Houma-Thibodaux area.
By and large, I think that respect has been earned over time because they know that I have their back and want them to do well and I’m also young enough to relate to them — although I’m getting older and older by the second.
But I’m about to say something that’s going to taint some of that trust and lower my approval rating amongst local students.
I’m ready for summer to end and for you guys to get back to school.
Yeah, I know that’s treason, but guys and gals, I’m bored!
With no high school sporting events to keep me on my toes, I’m having to get awfully creative to fill out my budget each week and I’m about out of ideas.
So I’m already looking ahead to August when the machine revs back up again and school sports get under way.
So here are five bold predictions I’d like to make.
Man, I can’t wait for August to get here and for us to get started!
PREDICTION 1: Big year for Terrebonne High School
This is going to be a huge athletic year for Terrebonne High School! Start with football. The Tigers return the lion’s share of a roster which had success last
year in a brutally tough class 5A District. Terrebonne has Jakhi Douglas, who is one of the hottest recruits in the country right now for the Class of 2020 with offers already from LSU and Alabama both. They also have rising senior Keshawn James, as well as a slew of other playmakers sprinkled across the field and serviceable players on both the offensive and defensive lines. And that’s just football. In basketball, Terrebonne will have a huge senior class and a first-year coach who is hungry to make his mark on the program. And in baseball, the Tigers had a solid Swampland season and should be poised to make significant strides. And that’s all without mentioning volleyball softball, track and field, soccer, cross country and all of the other sports at the school which are poised to enjoy successes, as well.
PREDICTION 2: Lady Tarpons volleyball will excel, Tarpons football will surprise
The South Lafourche volleyball team will dominate in 2018. They return just about everything from a group which advanced all the way to the Pontchartrain Center last year for the first time in school history. But while volleyball dominates a lot of the fall headlines, I also expect the Tarpons’ football team to make waves, as well. South Lafourche lost a lot of playmakers off 2017’s squad, yes. But they have a new scheme which looked pretty good in the spring. I think the Tarpons will surprise some folks and will have a good season on the football field. While that happens, I think volleyball will compete for a ring.
PREDICTION 3: VCHS football will be OK without Robison
Selfishly, it stinks that Andrew Robison transferred to Hahnville and will no longer be part of Vandebilt Catholic’s football team. I will miss watching that kid play. But the Terriers are far from a one-man show. They will be just fine in 2018. Vandebilt had a young group last season and they return a lot of skill players on both sides of the ball. Of bigger concern for Vandebilt is its coaching staff. The Terriers have to replace both coordinators off last year’s staff with Mike Walker gone to Berwick and Drew Robison gone from the school.
PREDICTION 4: E.D. White baseball may have championship season
The E.D. White baseball team is always good, so predicting success for those guys in 2019 is a bit of a cop-off, so I’ll add a little flavor to the pot and say that this may be the year they dog-pile in Sulphur. The Cardinals have a lot of players back off a solid club this past season, including a slew of quality arms and a plethora of sticks. The Cardinals just may be the last team standing. If they’re not, it’s going to take one heck of a club to knock them off. Those guys can really Play at a high level.
PREDICTION 5: Kathy Luke gets her 2nd title?
When Kathy Luke got unceremoniously relieved of her duties at Vandebilt Catholic, I made her a promise. I told her that I’d be there the next time she coached a team to the State Championship — just like I was when she and the Lady Terriers won the title many moons ago. I think this year may be the year for me to make good on that promise. The Christian Warriors were young last year, but were highly successful, making it to the Division IV State Finals. This year, the team will be better in tune with Luke’s system and will thrive. I think the ring is about to follow.
It stinks to lose Andrew Robison to Hahnville. There’s no other way to say it, But we think the Vandebilt catholic football team will still have some moja this year.
