The Bayou Region’s newest state senator is a veteran Democratic legislator from Gonzales, whose district includes portions of Lafourche Parish.

Ed Price defeated Assumption Parish sugar grower Warren Harang in a Saturday runoff, garnering 9,224 votes or 63 percent, compared to Harang’s 5,507 votes, or 37 percent.

The Memorial Day weekend runoff attracted 20.2 percent of registered voters from District 2, which includes parts of Ascension, Assumption, Iberville, St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, St. James, and West Baton Rouge parishes, as well as Lafourche.

The runoff followed a 14-candidate primary that saw Harang and Price come out on top.

The election was necessitated by the resignation of Troy Brown, who was dealing with two domestic violence cases.

House District 58, which Price had represented until now, includes Ascension, St. James and Iberville. He took that seat in 2012. Price is vicechair of the Louisiana Black Legislative Caucus. In the House he has served on the Commerce, Education, Retirement and Atchafalaya Basin committees.

He is a Grambling State University alumnus.
