The Terrebonne Parish Public Library will host its 15th annual Jambalaya Writers’ Conference at the Main Branch Library in Houma on March 3, 2018.

This year’s keynote speaker is none other than world-renown author, screenwriter, and producer, R.L. Stine – the series creator of Fear Street, Nightmare Room and his most popular series, Goosebumps. The latter has sold more than 400 million copies worldwide. He has been named by The Guinness Book of World Records to be the best-selling series author in history. His work has been adapted into a successful television series that lasted throughout the 90’s, both board and video games, as well as the big screen debut of the “Goose-bumps” movie in 2015, starring Jack Black as the beloved author. Some have said that the success of Goosebumps was a “literary phenomenon”. The books were eventually translated into 16 different languages and have made Mr. Stine one of the most successful children’s writers of all time.

Additional writers and presenters at the conference include an impressive line-up of local and national authors including: New York Times and USA Today bestselling novelist Joshilyn Jackson; The award-winning, internationally bestselling author of books for teens, children, and adults, Melissa Marr; Nicholls State University creative writing professor, Katherine Conner; Recipient of a 2016 Rona Jaffe Foundation Writer’s Award, Ladee Hubbard; and Professor of English and Coordinator of Creative Writing at Southeastern Louisiana University, Jack B. Bedell who has been selected by Governor John Bel Edwards to serve as Louisiana Poet Laureate from 2017-2019. Maurice Carlos Ruffln, Katy Simpson Smith, Dr. John Doucet, Liz Talley, and Marti Dumas are among the talented authors who will be showcasing their works as well.

Local spoken word poet and author, Johnny Anomaly will also be leading a writing workshop, discussing the art of spoken word, and creative coping. A performance will also be held by the poet during the lunchtime session which is from 11:30 AM -12:10 PM.

The conference fee is $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Students pay only $10 at the door but must have student identification. You must register to attend the keynote address and to be eligible for a lunch ticket.

“Readers and writers alike are welcome to attend our event.” says Jessi Suire, the event’s coordinator. “While the conference is geared towards the craft of writing, people who are passionate about reading will undoubtedly enjoy spending a day with some of their favorite authors. Writers will learn about their craft; readers will discover new writers.” Jessi also states that, “Attendees are more than welcome to spend the whole day but do not have to if they are only interested in certain workshops. Sessions end at 5 PM and are followed by a sunset social out on our 2nd floor reading deck. This is the perfect way for guests to mingle and unwind after a full day of learning, networking, and inspiring each other.”

Doors will open to the Main Branch Library at 7 AM for registration. Sessions will start at 8:30 AM and generally last for 50 minutes. 5-6 sessions may be going on at once, in different parts of the library. Books-A-Million will be orchestrating a book fair where presenting authors will be on hand to sell and sign their books.
