Summertime means fishing time. Fishing time means rodeos and competitions.

Our area has plenty of that in the coming weeks and months-especially on Grand Isle.

In the coming weeks, the Jefferson Parish island will be prime with fishing rodeos-events that will take place at multiple marinas on the island that will crown champions throughout various categories.

The fishing sparks a huge summertime economic engine locally, as the fishermen cram hotels, camps, marinas, stores and restaurants to bring dollars to businesses in the area.

“There is no measure as to how important fishing is to this area,” Lafourche Parish Councilman Daniel Lorraine said. “It’s a huge revenue stream that helps our people tremendously. It’s one of the biggest sources of income-especially during the summertime that helps our area grow.”

This coming weekend will mark a big one on Grand Isle, as the 17th-Annual Grand Isle Speckled Trout Rodeo will take place May 22-24 at Bridge Side Marina.

The always-popular rodeo features fishing, of course. But it also has door prizes, an awards ceremony and live music and dance-especially on Saturday night after the anglers are finished competing for the day.

The rodeo will crown champions in speckled trout, of course. But redfish, flounder, sheepshead, cobia, mangrove snapper, drum, white trout and rat reds are also weighed.

Kids are also encouraged to compete in the three-day fishing competition.
