Eight-year-old Ryker Oeser broke a South Central Swimming Association’s (SCSA) record that stood for 31 ye are.


At the SCSA Championship Meet an June 30 at the Cut Off Youth Center. Oeser swam the 25-yard backstroke for the boys age 7-6 division in 18.75 seconds. The previous record, set in 1BW. was 1&.79 seconds.

“I didn’t know right away but after I felt excited.” Oeser, who swims for the Bayou Black Tarpons, said on breaking the record.

Oeser, who has been swimming competitively for four years, also holds the record for the age 6 and under division for the backstroke, which he broke two years ago.


At this year’s meet, he also wan the 25-yard freestyle. 25-yard butterfly, and the 100-yard individual medley. He was the high-point winner for his age and gender group.

“I like to win races so I can eat the candy.” the young swimmer said.

Originally from Oklahoma (now lives in Houma), Oeser has been swimming since he was 6-months-old. He says it’s his favorite afterschool activity, even though he enjoys playing baseball, basketball, football, and Fortnite as well.


Oeser plans to swim for the United States Olympic Swim Team when he is 15 years old.
