The sun shined high and bright and hundreds of locals crossed the finish line tills past weekend at TFAE’s Run for Excellence this past weekend in downtown Houms.

When the moon took over the night sky, literally more than 2,000 more danced the night away to the tunes of live music, while also enjoying delicious eats from some of the best places around.

Folks, it just doesn’t get any better than that in the spring-time in Southeast Louisiana.

TFAE’s Run for Excellence was again a hit this weekend, attracting thousands of people to Downtown Houma to help raise money for education in the community.

TFAE Executive Director Katie Portier said the event was a success. She thanked the community for turning out in support of the event, which continues to grow each year.

“I thought it was a fantastic day,” Portiar said. “It’s always great to see an event come together the day of. It’s such a unique event that I think people really enjoy coming out to sap

Port a good cause, while having so much fun. Everyone enjoyed the music and, of course, the food and drinks were delicious as well.”

Before the party officially started, some talented racers strutted their stuff in the SK.

Khanh Labat won the title for Overall Female Winner, as the first woman to cross the finish line in the race. Nate Castillo won the race for Overall Male Winner, beating all of his counterparts in the race.

But while there are a pack of serious, competitive runners each year in the growing race, the event also welcomes those who want to job, stroll or even walk the course at their own pace.

Portier said hundreds of participants took part in the race and combing through social media photos, one could see the look of excitement on the faces of all as they conquered the track and crossed the finish line.

The winner of The Mildred Award this year went to Calvin Deroche.

The Mildred Award is handed out each year at TFAE’s race to the oldest participant.

Mr. Deroche is 79.

Ainsley’s Angels also participated in the race this year and Portier said having that group added a heart-warming element to an already philanthropic day.

But while the race kicks off the events of the day, once the final pack of folks cross the finish line, the fun is just beginning.

TFAE’s Run for Excellence also features a food festival, which has become a huge part of the experience.

Portier said more than 2,000 people attended the Food Festival this year, which had mountains of food from several locals, as well as drinks.

On the music stage, Category 6 livened up the atmosphere with fun cover tunes, which kept folks dancing and passing a good time, while enjoying their delicious food and drinks.

Mr. PoBoy won the honor of being this year’s Best of the Feat, thanks to their 100-foot po-boy, which was a huge hit.

Portier said the entire day was memorable with so many people rallying together for a great cause.

TFAE is a non-profit with the mission to provide additional support to local public schools in Terrebonne.

In their history, TFAE has generated more than $1 million in grant dollars to Terrebonne public school teachers, which allowed them to buy supplies, while also serving as assets for innovative projects, ideas, technology and more.

All proceeds for the race go to TFAE to help them in their journey.

“Everyone I saw – participants, volunteers, food partners – were all having a great time.” Portier said. “The band was great, the food was delicious and the beer was cold. Overall, it was just a good time. We are so thankful to everyone who come out to support TFAE. Like we said at the event each and every person at the event was supporting local education just by being there.”
