Last Friday night, the Foundation for Terrebonne General Medical Center; along with the TGMC Community Sports Institute, inducted six athletes into the Bayou Region Athletic Hall of Fame at a banquet held at Cypress Columns in Gray.

The Foundation honored Larose’s Ron Estay, the late Earl Gros from Schriever, Houma’s Harold Haydel, Tommy Hudson of Matthews, Shreveport native, Wally Whitehurst (raised in Houma since age 4) and Raceland’s Larry Wilson at this year’s banquet which held its inaugural ceremony last year.

Collectively, this gear’s group received numerous accolades at their high schools and universities. Every honoree made it to the professional level in their respective sport.


Each inductee not only received award at the event but also a spot on the Bayou Region Athletic Wall of Fame that is located in the TGMC Community Sports Institute.

Guest speaker, Cut Off native, first-year-inductee, and former Saints quarterback, Bobby Hebert gave favorable remarks about each of the athletes. Although Hebert is inducted into the Louisiana Football Hall of Fame and Saints Hall of Fame, he said the Bayou Region Hall of Fame means the most to him. During his speech, he said he felt like he was addressing “family members.”

Each honoree received introductions from family members, friends, or former teammates, and a mini-documentary (each one now available on YouTube), courtesy of TGMC Community Sports Institute The documentaries also played in front of the audience before each athlete accepted their award


The banquet also featured a live auction and food catered by Cypress Columns.

All proceeds from the event go to supporting the Foundation to help purchase a medical facility on wheels, known as “Wellness on Wheels.” The vehicle will be used by Community Sports Institute for concussion tearing on local high school athletes. It will also provide EKG screening mr athletes and be used by the TGMC Blood Donor Center mrblood drives and various other TGMC departments that benefit the community.

“It’s gratifying that people are understanding what some of the people have done in our area that they may not have known before. So we appreciate everything that has gone on with, this” Stan Gravois, cofounder of the banquet said during the ceremony’s opening remarks. “I appreciate the part about paying it forward, where now because of you guys in here…who have been heroes in our area, were paying it forward. .You being here tonight is helping for the future,”
