A Houma American Legion post is hosting the organization’s annual regional conference in late October, and inviting veterans – whether or not currently affiliated with the Legion – to take part in the events.
“About 125 veterans and their families will be celebrating our fellowship and making plans for future events to support and serve our local community,” said M. Lee Shafer III, vice commander of the Lennox-Hotard Post 31 on Legion Avenue. “All veterans even if they are not members of the American Legion, are invited to attend the weekend’s events and if they join the Legion their conference fees and food are covered for the weekend.”
The theme of the conference scheduled for the weekend of Oct. 21 to 23, is “A Family of Veterans Helping Other Veterans and Their Families.”
Shaffer and other members of the post are extending a special invitation to veterans of the nation’s most recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Veterans’ organizations nationwide have indicated that those men and women have been less likely to join other vets in fellowship, despite sometimes pressing emotional and family support needs.
“The conference will have activities, speakers and opportunities for veterans of all ages to socialize and integrate with other spouses, veterans and children of veterans,” a statement released by the post says.
The weekend will include a memorial for veterans and culminate with a keynote speech from Sgt. Rick Yarosh, a retired Purple Heart recipient. Yarosh, a New Yorker, will describe his service, battles with tough times, and the personal victories that resulted.
Yarosh, who had been captain of his high school’s football and wrestling teams, joined the Army in 2004 and was deployed to Iraq a year later.
On Sept. 1, 2006, he was part of a routine military mission in the Abu Ghraib region. His Bradley fighting vehicle was hit with an IED and became engulfed in flames. Yarosh and two other soldiers ended up at an Army medical center burn unit in San Antonio. The story he tells involves the matter of being able “to get through anything with a positive attitude.”

Regional Military Museum Round-Table
The Houma-Terrebonne Regional Military Museum’s monthly round table seminar is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tues., Oct. 18, at the Terrebonne Parish main library.
This month’s speaker is Houma native Terry Fornof, who will talk about his extensive Air Force career. Fornof has logged 4,680 fighter jet hours, 132 combat hours, and 2,290 hours as an instructor.
He has received two Top Gun honors.
Anyone interested in aviation or perhaps an Air Force career, is particularly welcome, though the talk is open to anyone in the general public.
Admission is free.
The Houma-Terrebonne Military Museum will host its monthly round table next Tuesday, October 18, at 6 p.m. Houma native Terry Fornof will speak about his career at the event.
