Houma’s Sam & Jim Acting Co. will continue to explore unconventional works when the company stages David Lindsay-Abaire’s absurdist comedy “Fuddy Meers” at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center, Wednesday, Feb. 20, to Sunday, Feb. 24, and Wednesday, Feb. 27, to Friday, Feb.29. Showtimes are 8 p.m. weeknights and 3 p.m. weekends. Tickets cost $15.

“Fuddy” could perhaps be described as “Arsenic and Old Lace” meets “50 First Dates,” Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog and David Lynch. The play concerns a woman, Claire, whose entire memory leaves her each morning. The woman believes she is married and has a son until she is informed otherwise by a character with a criminal past called “Limping Man,” who appears from under her bed.

The man takes Claire to visit his mother at home, a stroke victim who pronounces “funny mirrors” as “fuddy meers,” hence the play’s title. While at the mother’s house, Claire is introduced to a character named Millet who is accompanied by his foul-mouthed hand puppet Hinky Binky. The mother has enough strength to stab Limping Man. Gunplay ensues.

Needless to say, everyone is lying about who they are and have connections to one another, which are slowly revealed to the audience.

“Fuddy” garnered a couple of theater awards following its 1999 premiere. Playwright Lindsay-Abaire wrote the play after seeing a news report about the type of amnesia suffered by Claire. Call (985) 804-0658 for more information.
