Think you have the voice, charisma and stage presence to be named the best singer the Tri-parish area has to offer? Then, the third annual Centerstage Singing Competition audition might be for you.

Auditions for the singing competition are set for Aug. 15 at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 4. There is no preregistration or entry fee, show creator Ann Duplantis said.

The competition is for amateur singers ages 9 years old and up. Participants under 17 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

At the audition, each contestant is required to sing a maximum two-minute a cappella song of their choice before a panel of judges. The judges will select 20 songbirds to vie for the Centerstage title on Sept. 19.

Duplantis said the competition winner receives studio time with Houma record producer Trenell Parfait at Big Bang Recording Studio, along with $1,000 worth of cash and prizes.

Centerstage, cosponsored by Houma’s Trapp Cadillac Chevrolet and Assurance Financial, is a continuation of Southland Mall’s Hometown Stars singing competition back in the early 2000s.

Dawn Becker and Duplantis cofounded the competition as a way for locals, who might not get their chance to participate in competitions like “American Idol” and “America’s Got Talent,” to showcase their gifts.

“There was so much talent last year. that I couldn’t just pick 20 contestants,” Duplantis said. “Who knows, maybe that will be the case this year, too.”
