The 100 Black Men of St. Mary Parish is hosting its 11th annual 5K Run/Walk Saturday, Aug. 30, as part of the Louisiana Shrimp & Petroleum Festival in Morgan City.

The event funds scholarships for 100 Black Men, a non-profit community service organization comprised of black business, industry, education and government leaders devoted to confronting challenges facing young African-Americans.

“Since day one, cumulatively, we have awarded over $38,000 in scholarships to young men and young ladies in St. Mary Parish public schools. We enjoy blessing our youth, and look forward to continuing this tradition,” said Clarence Robinson Jr., president of the 100 Black Men of St. Mary Parish.

The 5K run begins at 8 a.m. in Morgan City’s historic district, near City Hall.

A $200 cash award will be given to the top male and female finishers. Trophies will be given to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers.

Medals will be given to the following second and third place finishers: 13 and under male and female; 14-24 male and female; 25-34 male and female; 35-44 male and female; 45-54 male and female; 55 and over male & female.

The entry fee is $18 in advance or $25 day of race, and $14 to participants aged 62 or older. Entrants will receive a T-shirt.

Everyone who enters the race is eligible to win two New Orleans Hornets tickets.

Entry forms can be downloaded at www.kbze.com or call (985) 312-2154.

Donations can be mailed to: The 100 Black Men of St. Mary Parish, 11th annual 5K/Fun Run/Walk, c/o P.O. Box 43, Morgan City, LA 70381.

“We encourage men and women of all ages and races to participate and to bring their children. In fact, many dads and moms run the entire course while pushing their infant’s stroller. It’s great fun for the whole family,” Robinson said.
