Actor Danny Glover will give the keynote address at the Terrebonne Parish Chapter of the NAACP 25th Anniversary Banquet July 27 at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center.

“To get this type of individual to address our banquet, is simply a blessing,” Terrebonne NAACP President Jerome Boykin said.

The Terrebonne NAACP uses all proceeds from its annual banquet, after expenses, to fund scholarships to graduating students from a Terrebonne Parish High School, public or private, who meet certain criteria set forth by the Houma NAACP, Diana Collins, Terrebonne NAACP youth director explained.

“In order to qualify, the graduating seniors must have a grade point average over 2.0, they must be planning to attend a four year college, and they have to be active in the community, among other things,” Collins said.

Boykin said the banquet is the group’s major fundraiser, and determines the number of scholarships the organization is able to award.

“I couldn’t really give you an accurate figure, but an accurate guesstimate would be that the

Terrebonne Parish Chapter of the NAACP has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships since our first event,” he said.

Tickets for the event are $50, and are not yet on sale, but will soon be available exclusively at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center, Boykin said.

Glover, who was born July 22, 1946, in San Francisco, holds numerous acting awards. He is most remembered as one of the stars of the “Lethal Weapon,” series n the first of a movie series portraying mismatched police officers. The movies paired him with Mel Gibson.

“Shooter” is Glover’s recent flick. He stars in the movie with Mark Wahlberg.

The plot is about a marksman, Wahlberg, living in exile, who is coaxed back into action after learning of a plot to kill the president. Ultimately double-crossed and framed for the attempt, he goes on the run to track the real killer and find out how exactly set him up, and why, according to International Movie Database, www.imdb.com.

Glover joins a cast of notables whom the Terrebonne Parish Chapter of the NAACP has featured as past banquet guest speaker. More recent celebrities included, last year, comedian Dick Gregory; and in 2005, Elder Bernice King, the daughter of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., and television judges Greg Mathis and former “Divorce Court” star Mablean Ephriam.

For more information on the 2007 banquet, including sponsorship, Collins said interested parties may call her at (985) 381-3379.
