A contentious campaign for a state Senate seat vacated by the term-limited Butch Gautreaux has ended with farmer and land manager Bret Allain defeating Tri-Parish Times owner Darrin Guidry 14,618 to 13,846 at the completion of Saturday’s primary election.

With 51.36 percent of the overall ballots cast going his way, Allain carried both Ibera and St. Mary parishes by a margin that more than doubled the votes gained by Guidry in those areas. Votes cast were 1,288 to 524 in Iberia and 8,955 to 4,426 in St. Mary parishes.

By contrast, in what many saw as an east-west battle, Guidry carried Lafourche Parish 2,337 to 1,716 and Terrebonne 6,559 to 2,659.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to represent all of District 21,” Allain said. “It was a tough battle. To tell you the truth, I’m just tired.”

Allain said he learned a lot about himself during this his first run for public office. “I learned a lot about what my values are,” he said. “I learned how much I love my wife and kids who have stood by me.”

Allain has been a strong backer for the development and transitioning of U.S. Highway 90 to Interstate 49. He said he wants to see a more business friendly environment in the state and enhance commerce in south Louisiana.
