Twenty-four teenagers representing six public and private high schools in Terrebonne Parish will be honored Saturday by American Legion Posts 31, 272 and 380, with one of the academic and civic nominees being named teenager of the year.

For a 55th year, American Legion members are recognizing youths that have made their marks by way of accomplishments in school, church and community involvement.

Nominees submit packets that contain transcripts, resumes, achievements and letters of recommendation to a panel of judges. Nominees range in age from 15 to 19 by the completion of a year being covered and must be residents of Terrebonne Parish for at least one year.

Those candidates under consideration for their contributions in 2011, and the schools they represent include Ashley Elizabeth Allemand, Mi Tu Lam, Seth James Louviere and Beau Daniel Moore of H.L. Bourgeois High School.

Allen J. Ellender Memorial High School is represented by Jacelyn Taylor Duthu, Hope Patricia Hunter, Kayonia Monique Myles and Stephen Anthony Shaw.

Kaily Beth Bourg, Destiny Rose Fitch, Alora Marie McCormick and Ryan Anthony Williams attend South Terrebonne High School, while Terrebonne High School is represented with Julio Mario Contreras, Jonna Marie Izaguirre, Angelle Marie Levron and Nathaniel Paul Marcel.

Students from Vandebilt Catholic High School include Alexande William DeBlieux, Gabrielle Villadores Espiritu, Allyce Elizabeth Trapp and Abigail Marie Yesso.

The list of nominees is rounded out with Abigail Rachel Chase, Lijah Hanzy, Amanda Marie Portier and Sophie Rae Trosclair of Houma Christian School.

The teenager of the year program will be held at the American Legion Post 31, 602 Legion Ave. in Houma and will begin with dinner at 7 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased from American Legion members or by calling Terrebonne Parish School Board member L.P. Bordelon (985) 876-3305.

Featured speakers for the event will include National Guard (retired) Maj. Gen. Hunt Downer and representatives from the Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce, South Central Industrial Association, Terrebonne Parish School Board, Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government.

Area American Legion posts began this program in 1957. The first winner was Leo Hebert Jr.

In January 2011, Lindsay White of South Terrebonne High School was named the area American Legion’s 54th Teenager of the Year.
