While volunteers for the Bayou Area Habitat for Humanity are building homes for area residents, the organization is looking for volunteers to fix up lunches for its sites throughout the area.

“We call it southern hospitality,” said Lynette Grazier, public relations director for the Bayou Area affiliate. “And following in the suit of southern hospitality, we provide lunches to volunteers on any construction site that we have.”

Habitat for Humanity is currently requesting volunteers to provide lunches at its locations in the Terrebonne and Lafourche area: Bon Jovi Boulevard in Gray where there are about seven homes going up; Levron Street in Houma where three homes are being built; Silver City Street in Houma where one home is currently being built; and Sanders Street in Thibodaux where two homes are being built.

However, sites change on a weekly basis.

“It’s a weekly thing that changes, that we have to update because we’re building so many houses right now,” said Grazier. “We’re about to start in Galliano, which is going to be 26 houses. At this point we’re looking at a March start for Galliano, but we’re going to be looking for folks to help us with lunches out there, also.”

Representatives for Habitat for Humanity said lunches will serve anywhere from five to 50 people, depending on the day and the site. Grazier said lunches can be served however possible. “We’re even willing, if someone wants to cook and they don’t have the money, we’re willing to help pay for the food if they need us to do that.

“Mostly we’re looking for donations,” she added. “Normally, if you cook on site, people bring the burners and the big pots. Or you can cook it at home and bring it out there and serve it. If you want to write a check and go buy lunch … that’s fine too. We just like to feed our volunteers because we abide by the southern hospitality.”
