The Oct. 20 race for the St. Mary Parish assessor’s job will pit sitting Morgan City Councilman Jarrod Longman and Town of Baldwin Mayor Wayne Breaux. Both are

Democrats.

Because of term limits, long-time state House lawmaker Jack Smith is unable to run again, opening his District 50 seat. The area extends from Berwick to Jeanerette in West St. Mary Parish and into East St. Martin Parish, which is located adjacent to Morgan City.

Berwick trial lawyer Allen McElroy will spar with former mayor of the City of Franklin Sam Jones and Franklin Councilman Kenny Scelfo Sr. All three candidates are Democrats.

The ballot will also include:

Constable, Justice of the Peace, Ward 2: Merker Broussard and Steven Drexler, both Democrats.

Parish Council, District 1: the Rev. Donald Grimm, the Rev. Craig Matthews and club owner John C. Lockett. All three candidates are African-American, and all three are Democrats.

Parish Council, District 2: Laura Goulas, Republican, and Charles “Butch” Middleton,

Democrat. Middleton is the incumbent.

Parish Council, District 3: Herbert Bell and David Hanagriff, both Democrats.

Parish Council, District 4: Glen Hidalgo and Peter Soprano, both Democrats. Soprano previously served two terms as at-large councilman, and a prior as councilman of this seat.

Parish Council, District 5: J.L. Democrats “Jimmy” Bernauer and Jerry D. Potter and Republican Ken Singleton. Bernauer is a former long-time mayor of the City of

Patterson.

Parish Council, District 8: Sterling Fryou and Chuck Walters. Both are Democrats. Walters has previously served as parish councilman-at-large.

Parish Councilman-At-Large, District 9: Russel Boykin and Albert Foulcard. Both are

Democrats. Foulcard is the incumbent and has previously served as parish president.

Parish Council At Large, District 10: Steve Bierhorst, Democrat, and Keith Leonard, no party affiliation. Both previously served as individual councilmen for their respective districts.

Parish President Paul Naquin will automatically serve a second term, as he had no opponents.

Also unopposed during qualifying were: Gary Duhon, councilman-at-large; Logan Fromenthal, councilman of District 6; and Kevin Voisin, councilman of District 7.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff David Naquin will once again face his perennial opponent George

Rodriguez.

Naquin has defeated Rodriguez in his past two attempts to secure the sheriff job. Both men are Democrats.
