State Sen. Norby Chabert (D-Chauvin) will serve on six committees when the regular legislatives convenes on March 29, 2010.

Senate President Joel Chaisson II assigned Chabert to the standing committees on Natural Resources, Insurance, Senate & Governmental Affairs, Judicial B and the Senate Select Committee Coastal Restoration and Flood Control.

He will chair the Senate Select committee on Vocational & Technical Education.

“I am humbled by the trust that the president has placed in me as a freshman senator to receive such distinguished committee assignments,” Chabert said. “I think it reflects his belief that I can do a good job.”

Chabert said he was particularly excited to be on committees that will play a large role in crafting legislation critical to the issues facing his District 20 constituents.

As chairman of the Vocational & Technical Education, Chabert will deal with issues on providing quality, accessible postsecondary vocational and technical education and making the best use of the facilities and resources.

L.E. Fletcher Technical Community College is looking to build a main campus on La. Highway 311 in Gray. Chabert said it will be one of his top priorities.

“With Fletcher growing at the rate it is, it needs all the help it can get,” he said. “My main goal is to help Fletcher get the appropriations needed for its campus move to (La) Highway 311, and make that a successful transition.”
