A couple was arrested in Cut Off Tuesday after nearly running over a Lafourche Parish deputy directing traffic at a crash scene.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Larry Weidel said Deputy Aaron Montez had to jump out of the car’s path to avoid being hit. He pursued the car to East 74th Street before the driver stopped.

Stephen Theriot Jr., 46, of 180 West 63rd St., Cut Off, and has passenger, Sancey M. Guidry, 22, who described herself as homeless, were arrested after Montez found crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

Weidel said Theriot gave the deputy permission to search the vehicle. On the driver’s side front seat and back seat, Montez found drug paraphernalia.

After initially denying Montez access to her purse, Weidel said Guidry slammed the purse on the car and removed a tin can from inside. The can contained over 50 grams of crack cocaine and more drug paraphernalia, he said. Also inside the purse a bottle containing several pills was found.

Inside the front pocket of Theriot’s pants, Montez found a small bag of crack cocaine, Weidel said.

The total street value for the drugs recovered is estimated to be $2,500, he said.

At the South Lafourche Sub-station, Theriot was charged with possession of schedule II narcotics (crack cocaine) with intent to distribute; possession of drug paraphernalia; refusing to obey a police officer and traffic signs, and expired motor vehicle identification.

Guidry was charged with possession with intent to distribute Schedule II (crack cocaine); possession of Schedule IV narcotics; possession of Schedule III narcotics; possession of Legend drug n Soma; possession of drug paraphernalia; and for an outstanding contempt of court warrant.

Weidel said the maximum penalty that can be levied for the charges against the couple if 30 years in prison and $50,000 in fines.

Both Theriot and Guidry have past criminal histories, according to Weidel. Theriot’s criminal record includes domestic abuse and several drug charges. Guidry’s past arrests include contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, contempt of court and drug charges.
