An early Thursday morning wreck claimed the life of James Baggett, 54, of Englewood, Fla., on Louisiana Highway 308 in Cut Off.

According to state police, Baggett was traveling north on La. Hwy. 308 in a 2003 Hyundai Elantra when his vehicle veered off the right shoulder of the road and slammed into a ditch. Baggett’s vehicle struck a culvert, crossed a private drive and entered a second ditch in the process, state police said. Once he exited the ditch, his vehicle overturned and struck a fence post before coming to a rest.

Baggett was partially ejected from the vehicle. Troopers said although he was wearing a seatbelt, it is unknown whether he was wearing it properly.

The Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced Baggett dead at the scene.

Police said alcohol is expected to be a factor in the crash but toxicology results are pending.
