Eric Gaudet Jr. and James Carinhas sailed into justice of the peace seats in St. Mary Parish.


Gaudet, a resident of Centerville, beat William Lanclos Jr. and Louella Mandubourg Roberson with 70.40 percent (647) of the vote. Lanclos received 11.10 percent (102 votes) and Roberson, 18.50 percent (170 votes).

Meanwhile, Carinhas, a 21-year member of the Patterson Police Department, garnered 54.49 percent (1,292 votes), beating opponents Shawn Canty, who received 20.71 percent (491 votes) and David Hill, who had 24.80 percent, 588 votes.

Other measures on Saturday’s ballot in St. Mary that were overwhelming approved include:

  • Consolidated School District No. 5 request to renew an 11.18 mills property tax for 10 years that would offer $ 6.3 million per year for elementary and secondary school financing. The issue received 70.74 percent of the votes in favor.
  • St. Mary Parish Water Commission No. 2 received approval of a proposed 11 mills tax renewal for the next 10 years. The estimated annual collection of $730,000 is intended for the constructing and improving of water-work and sewage systems. The measure garnered 72.12 percent of the vote in favor.
  • Recreational District No. 2 received 87.74 percent of the vote in favor of continuing a 13.34 mills tax on all property to generate an estimated $1.1 million annually to maintain and improve recreational facilities. This measure is joined with a 0.34 mills levy to be continued through 2011.
  • Recreational District No. 2 received approval to secure $1 million in general obligation bonds for the next 10 years to improve and maintain parks, playgrounds, recreation centers, by way of ad valorem taxes based on an estimated 3 mills. The measure was approved with 89.80 percent of the vote.
