Darrin Guidry will be the next Terrebonne Parish Councilman for District 6 after defeating Clyde F. Hamner in a run-off election.

Guidry, a Republican, won 2,282 votes for a 54 percent share, according to unofficial voting results. Fellow Republican Hamner earned 1,956 votes for a 46 percent share. The unofficial turnout was 45.1 percent in District 6.

Guidry will replace Russell Hornsby, who lost in the Oct. 24 primary.

The councilman-elect said his electoral victory is a testament to the efforts of those on his campaign and at the polls.

“It’s really Team Darrin that won this, not just myself,” he said.

Guidry said he will apply that same collective effort to his work on the council.

“The biggest thing about being a councilman is it’s a team effort. You’ve got to work with fellow council members, the parish president and even state representatives, because they’re in charge of capital outlay. We’re going to have to get some capital outlay, because we need money to get things done,” he said.

Guidry, who is currently on the board of the Terrebonne Levee and Conservation District, said that addressing flooding in Distrcit 6 is his first priority.

“We’ve been doing spot solutions. I want to work on the big picture, something long-term. I want all of District 6 to be covered by some form of forced drainage,” he said.

Guidry said he plans to walk his district and ask constituents what their most pressing problems are.

“The people will tell you if you talk to them. They’ll give you solutions,” Guidry said.
