State Rep. Joe Harrison secured his re-election bid Saturday with a 6,226 to 2,448 win over challenger Howard Castay Jr.

Having carried 71.78 percent of the ballots cast in the race, Harrison wasted little time on celebrating a win and Sunday, commented only about the work he is undertaking while remaining in office for another term.

“Right now, I’m working on BP claims,” Harrison said. “I met with [Gulf Coast Claims Facility Administrator] Kenneth Feinberg last week about getting some of these claims processed.”

Harrison said one worry he has related to the April 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon spill, is the low shrimp production that industry has experienced this year. He offered a reminder that after the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska, it took several years for the seafood industry there to rebound.

“We cannot afford that kind of hit to a $2 billion industry,” Harrison said.

Harrison is chairman of the House BP Claims Committee and said he intends to make sure District 51 gets its share of rightful compensation. He has warned of the federal government’s intention to divide BP money evenly among all state claims. “We have to stand our ground,” he said.
