A Golden Meadow man drowned after being caught in an overturned vehicle in the waters off LA 1.

An illegal immigrant, Enrique Cerina Auguile, 23, of Cut Off, was traveling southbound on LA 1 at about noon Saturday in a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier. Wilber Velasque, of Golden Meadow, was Auguile’s passenger.

Auguile’s vehicle crossed the center line into the northbound lane.

Auguile overcorrected to the right, causing his vehicle to spin clockwise.

The vehicle slid off the southbound shoulder, overturned and came to a stop in the water running parallel to LA 1.

Auguile escaped with minor injuries and refused medical attention at the scene.

Velasque was trapped underwater for several minutes and drowned. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office.

Auguile submitted a breath sample, which registered a BAC of .172. He was arrested for vehicular homicide, careless operation, no driver’s license and operating a motor vehicle in the United States without a lawful presence.

The state police are continuing their investigation.
