For the second time in 100 years Adler’s Jewelers of New Orleans will strike choice pieces of precious metal to mark a major occasion in Louisiana history.

As the manufacturer of the state’s first centennial coin in 1912, Adler’s has been selected by the Louisiana Bicentennial Commission to update its original design in honor of this year’s 200th anniversary of statehood.

“These are collector’s items and there is a whole field of collectors,” LBC Chairman Randy Haynie said.

The limited edition coins display the state seal on the front and a silhouette of the state in high relieve on the reverse side. A compass rose is used to indicate orientation.

Haynie said the 1.5-ounce coin is 1.5 inches in diameter. Each coin comes in a replica 1912 box with a certificate of authenticity. Adler’s has already struck 2,000 copper coins and the LBC is offering them at a cost of $49.95 each. Silver, gold and platinum coins are also being struck and cost will depend on market value at the time an order is placed.

Houma numismatist Gary Whipple said while commemorative coins are enjoyable to casual collectors or simply viewed as appealing keepsakes, one should not look at them as serious investments.

“I wouldn’t spend more than you can afford to spend,” he said. “Remember the 1776-1976 Centennial quarter? Well, today it is worth exactly 25 cents.”

Haynie countered Whipple’s observation, noting that the 1912 Louisiana Centennial coin has sold at market for $600.

The Louisiana Bicentennial coin will be sold throughout 2012. Sale of these coins and a full line of merchandise will help pay for statewide celebration events.
