From the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office:

We know tough times sometimes lead families to make tough choices, but staying warm safely shouldn’t be one of them.

Our key home heating safety tips below don’t cost a thing to follow compared to any of these fire hazards possibly costing a life!

• Place space heaters 3-5 feet from combustible objects like blankets
• Plug all heating appliances directly into wall outlets, not power strips or extension cords
• Do not use stoves or ovens to heat homes
• Don’t overfill fireplaces/wood-burning stoves
• Do not leave candles/open flames (or space heaters) left unattended
• Have working smoke alarms in your home!

***FIRE SAFETY WARNING FROM STATE FIRE MARSHAL WALLIS***
“This has been a record LOW year for fatal home fires in Louisiana. While it is unacceptable and tragic to lose even one life in a preventable home fire, the people of Louisiana should be proud of how fire-safe they have been this year. However, the month of December is on the cusp of becoming our most deadly in 2023. We HAVE to do better heading into the new year and beyond,” he said.
The SFM urges EVERYONE to ‘be fire smart to stay fire safe!’ It’s simple– look around to see if there are any fire hazards in your home and address them NOW, don’t smoke or cook when impaired or tired, keep smoking materials out of the reach of children, stay warm safely, have a working smoke alarm and look out for one another.
